Started Plotting

It’s been almost a month since my last blog post.  I have been plotting.  Or am I a pantser? Hm?

Well, the answer is both.  I’m a plotter first.  I like to have an idea of the roadmap.  But, I am also easily distracted by shiny objects. I’ll give you an example.  The first chapter is to introduce the main character and his wife.  The first scene was about a dream.  I know, it’s lame.  So many stories and movies start with a dream sequence.  But, don’t worry.  There is a lot of editing to do yet.

Anyway, where was I?  Oh, yeah.  I was going through the first chapter and got through the dream sequence, then the shower scenes, and got to the coffee before work scene.  I started to fret about a fight scene late in chapter two.  I did not want to write that fight scene.  It was going to be emotionally draining.

First stalling tactic:  I figured out that I can use Word’s Review function to read it out loud for me.  Oh, yeah.  Jackpot!  I can stall here for a long, long, long time.  See, I’m avoiding the fight scene successfully.

Second stalling tactic:  I need something better to check my grammar.  Grammarly to the rescue.  Free version.  Not good enough.  Spend money?  Nope.  Ah, the answer is the Hemingway Editor App.  If you’ve not tried it.  It’s fantastic - and you’ll hate it. All at the same time.

See what I did there?  Don’t tell me you missed it.  I sent you out to look for the Hemingway editor app, an amazing way to stall.  Isn’t it?

The fight scene was still bothering me.  I took time to work on chapter three.  Life after the fight.  That got me off zero and wasting, er, I mean spending time on other things.

Writer’s block number one: defeated.  Or is it?  Let’s see when I get to the fight scene and see if I get through it without shedding tears, or throwing my keyboard out the window.

AUTHOR’S NOTE:

How do you deal with preparing for a story?  Do you plot it, or go by the seat of your pants?  How do you deal with the bouts of writers’ block?
