What should my first novel be about?

Since I wrote the last entry I’ve been thinking about the next story.  This will be my first full length novel.

I’ve done some research to find what genre’s make the most money.  I found this on Google:

Book Genres That Make the Most Money

  • Romance/Erotica – $1.44 billion. ...
  • Crime/Mystery – $728.2 million. ...
  • Religious/Inspirational – $720 million. ...
  • Science Fiction/Fantasy – $590.2 million. ...
  • Horror – $79.6 million. ...

I dug a bit more deeply and found the E-Book Market Analysis and it breaks down the market nicely.

Diving deeply into the numbers it shows that Erotica as a market is very large.  I thought that BDSM would be at the top of the list.  I was only a bit off.  It shows that Romantic Erotica, while a sub-genre, does very well.  I say that because reviews seem important to me.  When looking at reviews per monthly sales, Romantic erotica comes at the top.

I kept working on defining the niche my first novel needed to fill.  I found a link to Erotica on Kindle - Market Report - K-lytics and started digging in.  What can I tell you? I’m a nerd.

The chart on page 11 shows Romantic Erotica, BDSM and Suspense lead the sales performance.  That’s the good news.  The bad news: The average price is the lowest on Kindle.  Ouch!

Want more bad news?  I certainly didn’t.  Erotica had (this is a 2015 report) the tenth highest number of titles.  Read:  Getting your book notice - dang near impossible.  Marketing is going to be key here.

The good news came in a chart that looks at sub-category and compares the number of titles to the amount of sales.  I think of it as sales per day, per title.  Suspense and Mystery erotica have the highest sales per day per title.  Then you look at page 22 and find that all three are in Kindle’s hot niches.

The thing I’m going to have to keep in mind is what they call the Beaten Track Mainstream.  Most titles and fairly high sales (overall).  BDSM Erotica is number one there, with the most titles.  They average 2 sales per day at about $2.54 each.  The number of titles, in 2015 was at 41 thousand.

There is a lot to think about when you move from writing as a hobby, to doing it to get published and with luck make some money - at least to buy your favorite coffee at the nearest book store.

Author’s Note:

Let me know your thoughts on where Erotica is going.  Is this a market that has come and gone, or is it still a growing market for E-Books.

Let’s start the conversation.
